  (Santa Maria, CA) - Two more Santa Maria athletes signed National Letters of Intent to swim at universities in the Fall of 2008. Rachael Wahl signed with Oregon State University and is expected to specialize in the 200 & 400 IM and 100 & 200 Flys. Wahl is currently training for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, to be held in July in Nebraska. Wahl has been an athlete with SMSC for over a decade and holds several team records.   (Palo Alto, CA) - Several athletes from the High Performance group attended the Stanford Grand Prix this past weekend, held on the Stanford University campus. Many former Olympians competed at the meet as well, including Natalie Coughlin and Klete Keller who both caame close to breaking World Records.   The High Performance Group recently returned from the 2008 California-Nevada Senior Championships where they finished 5th on some truly amazing performances. I have selected two female and two male swimmers of the meet: Female Swimmers of the Meet: Rachael Wahl had a great week at Sectionals, highlighted by getting under 5:00 for the first time in the 400m IM.   A good portion of the High Performance Group traveled to the NorCal Invitational this past weekend in Folsom, California. The meet was a long course invitational geared towards elite level Senior athletes and several new Olympic Trials standards were made by participating athletes at the meet. Our Male Swimmer of the Meet has to go to Jeremiah Palmerston. "JP" made his first Sectional cuts ever and produced some stellar performances on the weekend.   The 2008 Santa Maria Swim Club Junior Olympic Championship Team is the largest in club history. Thanks to the great coaching efforts of Coach Steve and Coach Matt, the parental support and the hard work of the athletes, SMSC looks to have their most successful Junior Olympics meet ever. This year's team has 181 individual entries, 35 athletes and 28 relays. The team's previous record was 142 individual entries, 30 athletes and 17 relays.   (Santa Maria, CA) - The 2008 Santa Maria Swim Club Junior Olympic Team will be announced later today on this site. The team will compete February 15-18, 2008 at Bakersfield College against teams from all over Central California. The group represents the largest Junior Olympic squad ever from SMSC.

  USA Swimming was named one of the 15 most influential sports education teams by the Institute of International Sport. The three year study honored 100 individuals and 15 organizations that have "creatively and effectively used sport in the very best way - as a means to educate and shape positive values."  

  SMSC performed quite well (again) at our own hosted Git R' Done meet, the last chance to qualify for CCS Junior Olympics. Swimmer of the Meet accolades for the High Performance Group go to: Josh Prenot for a stellar 100 Freestyle, directly following a 2-hour practice. & Rebekah Corbin for the big comeback. RC managed to tie and better many of her best times after nearly 6 weeks on the injured reserve list (and a lot of kicking) due to a broken wrist. Swimmer of the Meet accolades for...
