  (Santa Maria, CA) - The 82nd Annual Columbus Day Invitational (we don’t really know how long) wrapped up on Sunday with a strong SMSC showing. SMSC had the largest number of athletes in the competition, dominating early season competition. High Performance Group Swimmer of the Meet honors went to Josh Prenot and Jordan Devine.   Tryouts are Tuesday through Thursday, September 9 - 10 - 11, 2008 at the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center . Come out on the pool deck and look for the Santa Maria Swim Club banner.   You will need your checkbook and something for them to swim in.   (Las Vegas, NV) - The Santa Maria Swim Club will send four members of its coaching staff to the 2008 American Swimming Coaches World Clinic in Las Vegas, September 4-8. The World Clinic is host to 2000+ of the world's swimming coaches, coming together each September to exchange ideas, take classes and listen to coaches.   (Fresno, CA) - The Santa Maria Swim Club finished 3rd at the Central California Junior Olympic Championships this past weekend.  One of the single greatest JO performances in recent memory was led by Casey Bateman capturing the high point award for 15-18 Boys. Bateman finaled in every event he swam. Andrew Sterns, a newcomer from Florida, also grabbed the high point trophy for 9-10 Boys. Final Team Standings were as follows: 1st - Clovis;  2nd - Bakersfield; 3rd - Santa Maria;  4th - Fresno;  5th - PUMA.

  Several SMSC athletes will continue on into post-season competition. Rachael Wahl will head to the U.S. Open, July 28 through August 2 in Minneapolis, before heading on to Oregon State University to begin her NCAA swimming career. Josh Prenot will head to the USA Junior Nationals, August 4 through 8 in Minneapolis, as one of the youngest competitors in the meet. Casey Bateman will represent the USA in the North American Challenge, a 3-way competition between Mexico, Canada and the USA. Congratulations to all on their hard work.

  (Bakersfield, CA) - One of the fastest Sectional Swimming Championships in history concluded Sunday evening in Bakersfield with teams from across California and Nevada competing in the 5 day meet. SMSC had many good swims. Maddie Mastrup finished 13th in the 800 Freestyle. Rachael Wahl finaled in the 100 & 200 Flys and 200 & 400IM's. Josh Prenot finaled in the 400 IM. They were both named SMSC Swimmers of the Meet for their performances.

  (Omaha, NE) - Rachael Wahl finished her 2008 Olympiad, competing in the 200m Butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Trials today. Wahl swam the event in 2:16, just slightly over her best time. It was a big learning experience for an SMSC athlete that has dropped over 4 seconds in the event since November 2007. The Olympic Trials have seen some of the most prolific performances in swimming history - with several World and American records falling each night.
