Michael Phelps, Dara Torres and More Compete for Spot on Team USA

 

Live Online and Television Coverage of the Finals Begins Tomorrow at 6 p.m. ET

 

LOS ANGELES – July 6, 2009 – More than 20 Olympic athletes, including superstars Michael Phelps, Dara Torres, Katie Hoff, Ryan Lochte and Aaron Peirsol, hope to earn a spot on the U.S. World Championship team as Universal Sports presents live coverage of the USA Swimming National Championships this week. Television and live online coverage from Indianapolis will begin tomorrow at 6 p.m. ET and continue through Saturday, July 11.  The top swimmers in each event of the National Championships will be named to the 2009 U.S. World Championship Team that will compete at the FINA World Aquatics Championships later this month, presented by Universal Sports and NBC Sports. 

 

Three-time Olympic gold medalist and NBC Sports Olympic swimming analyst Rowdy Gaines and NBC Sports’ Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Ted Robinson will provide live commentary for Universal Sports and NBC, with Olympic gold medalist Summer Sanders reporting poolside from Indianapolis.

ABOUT THE ATHLETES: Fourteen-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps will be competing in the 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly events.  Dara Torres is expected to compete in the 50m freestyle event, which will be held on Thursday, and will possibly swim the 100m free on Friday. More than 14 world records have been set at the U.S. Swimming Nationals to date.

 

2009 FINA WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Universal Sports and NBC Sports present television and online coverage of the 2009 FINA World Aquatics Championships, July 17 – Aug. 2, 2009.
