SMSC off to a rockin' start at PUMA Spring Meet

(San Luis Obispo, CA) - The Santa Maria Swim Club age group teams got off to a great start to the 2008 Long Course season at the PUMA Spring opener, held on Sunday in San Luis Obispo. SMSC had too many heat winners to name, but all coaches were extremely pleased with how well SMSC athletes prepared and raced at the one day meet.

"This is a great start on our run towards Summer JO’s and beyond," said Presenior Coach Steve Lougee.

Swimmer of the Meet honors in the Gold group went to ....

Kim Hendrick is the gold group female swimmer of the meet.  Kim reached beyond her comfort zone on Sunday by swimming events outside of her normal 11-12 event schedule (200 Breast and the 200 Back).  While swimming best times in all her events she also qualified for JO's in the 13-14 age group in the 200 Breast.  The five weeks of perfect attendance at practice definitely paid off  today.

Gold group boys rookies (Vincent, Brandon, Briar, and Keanu) earn the male swimmers of the meet.  They attended their first meet as a gold grouper and represented what the gold group is all about.  They did a great job of picking up the new routines/traditions of the gold group.  Way to go gentlemen!

Swimmer of the Meet honors in the Presenior group went to Hailey Mastrup and Benton Ray. Hailey Mastrup swam to (2) first-time Summer JO cuts. Benton Ray managed 5 for 5 best times on the day.

Swimmer of the Meet honors in the High Performance group went to James Motley for a great 100 Butterfly effort. James managed to be just shy of his ’shaved and tapered’ swim of March, turning in a 1:02. Swimmer of the Meet honors also went to Rebekah Corbin and Maddie Mastrup for some great ’middle of training’ swims and ’getting it done’ while in the middle of hard training.

Way to go SMSC! The age group teams heads to SLO for the Spring Splash on May 2-3-4 while the High Performance group heads to Mission Viejo and the Meet of Champions this week.
