Speedo Texas Meet starts with SMSC records..

(College Station, TX) - The 2007 Speedo Texas Sectional got off to a fast start with SMSC breaking records and qualifying for higher level meets.

The lone event on Thursday night was the 1000 Freestyle.

On the girl's side of the action, Maddie Mastrup dropped over 20 seconds to narrowly miss qualifying for the 2007 Junior Nationals. Mastrup finished 24th in 10:24.74. Two heats later, Lora Lougee swam to 19th place in 10:19.93, qualifying for the Junior National meet.

On the men's side, Jamie Furber swam to a team record 9:30.08, also qualifying for USA Nationals this spring in New York City and finishing 11th. One heat later, Jason Dupere reclaimed his record in 9:29.88, finishing 10th.

At the end of Thursday's events, Santa Maria was tied for 9th place with La Mirada Armada, also of California. With only 13 athletes in the meet, SMSC is competing well against teams that brought 30 and even 40 or more athletes.

The meet continues through Sunday.
