Enjoy Your Swimming During The Colder Months!

Michael Ashmore

The darker, colder days of winter are now upon us. Some suggestions for maximizing your child's swimming experience can be found below! Some of them are obvious, but we see a lot of kids walking on-deck that are not dressed appropriately for the sport or for the practice.

1. Athletes should try to come to practice in warmer clothing. We want warm muscles for dryland - which should include SHOES and warm, dryland appropriate clothing. Perhaps joggers and a hoodie. If you athlete reports being cold - shorts, no socks and a tank top is likely not what we want to have.

Try an SMSC Parka - available on Swim Outlet - for travel to and from practice. These take about 8 weeks to order.

2. During practice, the coaches goal is to keep them moving constantly - but if your athlete reports getting cold - try a swim cap! This conserves an incredible amount of heat that can be lost through the head - plus it makes your technique better. (True story.)

3. When leaving practice: a large, warm towel is important. This is where the previously mentioned parka comes into play. The run from the water to your clothing is our weakest link - but that warm towel that is double sized can make it all better. A little hot chocolate isn't horrible either.

In swimming, much like life, your success can be tied to dressing appropriately for the occassion.

I hhope this helps. Reach out if you have questions or concerns.
